Do you sing well in the shower but as soon as you're in front of people, mysteriously clam up and lose you ability to sing at all? Or have you been told that you're 'tone deaf' and can't carry a tune in a paper bag? Or maybe you'd like to take an improv singing class but are just a little intimidated to jump in and find you've been putting it off?  If any of these ring a bell with you sign up for "Improv Singing, Step One" and learn some specific techniques for breaking through and starting to have fun with improv singing.

The class is taught by two people, David Norfleet and Patricia Pearson. Patricia teaches the parts that help you with leaving your shyness about singing behind and giving you specific things to do with your breath and body to begin to accomplish this, then gradually the focus shifts to David to teach the improv singing part. In, Improv Singing: Step 1, students are encouraged to make sound but you are not pushed to do anything they don't want to do.  The focus is on singing as a group, not solo. The idea is to open the doors to the fun of improv singing while minimizing the discomfort most of us feel when first starting to sing in a room with other people.

About Patricia Pearson:

Patricia has been improvising for over ten years, she first started with Sue Walden's Improv Works where she met David Norfleet as her improv singing teacher, and experienced Improv singing and loved it! When Improv Works stopped offering classes Patricia moved to BATS Improv where she has taken classes with every coach there and continued taking just about every improv singing class that was offered.

Improv in all it's forms has been life changing for her.

As an adolescent Patricia was accepted as a student to attend the prestigious High School of Performing Arts in New York City where she grew up but she was too shy to attend. Improv has changed all that! The sensitivity is still there but the fear of getting up on stage and performing is gone and been replaced with excitement and joy!

Patricia was introduced to the  Fitzmaurice Voice Work® about eight years ago and was so struck by it's benefits that she earned a certification as an assistant coach and is working on the next level. This work teaches performers how to use their body for better singing and speaking on and off stage. It opens performers up to emotional connection and allows their physical and emotional voice to be heard. This is accomplished by learning ways to manage the intensity of being in the spotlight on or off stage.

Techniques and ideas from this work is what Patricia is bringing to Improv singing at BATS.
